An elegant Mason’s ironstone Chinese style octagonal bowl decorated with delicate gilt and colored animal designs against a deep Mazarine-blue ground. A rich decoration animates the inside with a gilt rim and scallops enclosing stylized lotus flower patterns, symbolizing purity, on a rolling waves background. Exotic birds and peacocks in a landscape, representing enlightenment, surround the round bottom of the bowl adorned with a gilt shou medallion, symbol of longevity. Five-clawed dragons stride along the outer body, auspicious mythical beasts embodying imperial power. Also known as English porcelain, ironstone china was developed by Mason’s factory – whose printed mark appears on the bottom- during the 19th century to emulate the popular Chinese-style porcelain dinner services. This type of piece has only been produced for 10 years prior to WWI. This exquisite Mason’s ironstone bowl circa 1905, with its refined traditional Chinese gilt and colored decoration on blue ground and original octagonal shape, would be a remarkable addition to any collection.
