Exceptional Modern Seating Set by Russel Wright for Old Hickory, circa 1940

An incredibly rare complete three-piece Modern seating set (sofa and pair of lounge chairs) produced by the Old Hickory Furniture Company, Martinsville Indiana. The “Modern Line” was a boutique series launched by this historic American firm in 1940, with a limited run. The company engaged several noted Modern furniture designers to produce special collections, the most famous and prolific of those artists being Russel Wright. These particular seating examples are absolutely stunning and have aged to perfection. Stout modern oak frame with a fabulous Arts and Crafts joint detail. Seat and back executed in the company trademark hickory raffia basket weave. This design feels like the result of a collaboration between Robsjohn-Gibbings and Greene & Greene! Excellent Vintage Condition. The set has been professionally cleaned and polished. The wood displays a rich warm color and patina. All original seats and backs are intact, complete and suitable for heavy everyday use. Exquisite materials and craftsmanship. A serious set intended to anchor a cherished space.
